The-Boomers movie & wine night

In an innovative section (we’d like to think!), we thought we coalesce two of our much-loved indulgences; Movie’s & Wine. Here our resident wine expert (having completed the Christie’s wine course- and still standing!) suggests a bottle to uncork whilst enjoying a few of the latest DVD releases.

The movie: The Intern

Robert DeNiro stars alongside Anne Hathaway in this delightful comedy. DeNiro plays 70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker who after retiring discovers it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he secures the position of senior intern at an online fashion site. Crack open the red and enjoy.

The red, from Chile

Robert DeNiro’s New York restaurants boast some of the finest wines, so to complement the film I’d suggest this delicious Merlot. This wine comes from Alto Maipo close to the Andes Mountains where the oscillations in daily temperature make ideal conditions to grow Merlot. The wine is matured in contact with French oak adding complexity to the dense fruit.

Taste
Intense aromas of plum, raspberry and blackberry with notes of spice and cedar. The palate is powerfully fruity matched with a good dose of acidity and fine tannins.

The movie: The Lady in the Van

Splendid 2015 British comedy/drama, directed by Nicholas Hytner, written by Alan Bennett. Dame Maggie Smith and Alex Jennings star in the true story of Mary Shepherd, an elderly woman who lived in a conked out old van on Bennett’s driveway in London for 15 years.

The white, from New Zealand

The highly rated and good value Mud House Sauvignon Blanc 2014 Marlborough New Zealand.

‘This is something of a benchmark Kiwi sauvignon with lively, fresh fruit to the fore, including grapefruit, lemons and pears. It’s crisp, dry and goes well with food’.

Sunday Express – Jamie Goode – 21st June 2015

Taste

Pale straw yellow, with heady aromas of fresh grapefruit, guava and hints of nettles. Crisp, concentrated and vibrant on the palate, combining citrus and tropical fruit with green vegetal undertones.
