He’s confident the rebuild will be good for at least another hundred thousand kilometers but obviously he’s trying to sell me a service so I take that with a grain of salt. I’ve heard really mixed stories, some guys say their rebuilt box outlasted the rest of the car and shifted better than new, others say they were back in the shop within a year with the same problems. I suppose a lot of it comes down to the quality of the parts they use and how meticulous the shop is about cleaning everything and replacing all the wear items rather than just the obvious broken bits. The car is paid off and I do love driving it, that V8 is intoxicating and there’s really nothing comparable I could replace it with for what I’d get selling it with a dodgy gearbox. Found some pretty detailed info about rebuild standards on http://www.auditransmissionrepair.ae/ while I was researching and it seems like the shops that use OEM or upgraded clutch packs and actually bench test the unit afterwards tend to have way better outcomes than the ones doing budget rebuilds with cheap parts. For those of you who bit the bullet and had a performance Audi gearbox rebuilt, how long did it actually hold up and would you do it again?
